An osteopathic perspective for parents

Over the past year, we’ve been seeing more teenagers coming into clinic with subtle changes in their posture — things like uneven shoulders and hips, clothes not sitting quite right, walking slightly differently or a feeling of tightness in the back or chest.

The upcoming lunar year, 2026, welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse (丙午, Bing Wu). Shiatsu is a Japanese bodywork therapy with its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Based up on the same principles as acupuncture, shiatsu utilises finger pressure instead of needles to stimulate specific points on the body. Caring for Mothers after they have given birth is one of my passions . It is a time when a Mother needs the most support and love as her body, hormones and life have gone through HUGE changes, literally overnight.

In Chinese Medicine, the cyclical patterns of the seasons have what is called the ’18 days of Earth’ following the end of one season and the beginning of the next. It is a time of transition between seasons, a resting time for the Earth, and is a particularly good time to strengthen the immune system in preparation for what may come in the next Season.

I used to think that menstrual pain was a minor issue in the UK, as very few patients came to me seeking help for it. However, a recent experience made me realise the importance of addressing this issue.
