Exam Season Support: Headaches, Stress & Better Sleep
Exam season can place enormous pressure on students. Long hours of revision, lack of sleep, and constant mental stress often lead to headaches, fatigue, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating.
From a Classic Chinese Medicine perspective, exam-related headaches are commonly caused by a combination of:
• Stress and tension disrupting the flow of energy (“Liver Qi stagnation”)
• Mental overwork and prolonged sitting weakening energy and circulation (“Spleen Qi deficiency”)
• Late nights and poor sleep depleting the body’s natural reserves (“Qi and Blood depletion”)
Students may experience:
• Tight or throbbing headaches
• Brain fog and poor concentration
• Restless sleep
• Fatigue and emotional overwhelm
Simple Ways to Help
✔ Gentle acupressure on the temples, base of the skull, and feet
✔ Regular movement breaks during study sessions
✔ Prioritising sleep and short periods of rest
✔ Peppermint & chrysanthemum tea for tension headaches
✔ Red date & longan tea for exhaustion and fatigue
🌙 Gentle Acupuncture Support During Exams
Recently, I worked with several students preparing for GCSEs and A-levels who were struggling with headaches, stress, poor sleep, and difficulty focusing.
We began with a gentle, needle-free acupuncture approach, designed specifically for those who may feel uneasy about traditional needles. The sessions were calm, quiet, and deeply relaxing—a small pause in an otherwise busy and demanding routine.
After just a couple of sessions, students reported:
• Fewer headaches
• Better sleep
• Improved concentration
• Feeling calmer and less overwhelmed
Some also noticed improvements in menstrual discomfort, which had previously added another layer of stress during exam season.
Exam success is not only about studying harder — it’s also about supporting the body and mind so students can rest, focus, and perform at their best.
If your child is preparing for exams and feeling the strain, acupuncture may offer a gentle and supportive way to help them through this challenging period.
